Building Code and fail a new pool inspection, not once but twice. Extra revenue
for the city? Power play on the pool builder causing a three-day delay of
completion?
Two hours earlier, after being notified of this new problem, I sent an email
to the Building Official with pictures of the job, the Declaratory Statement from
2002 clarifying this issue, and the inspector’s written failure notice from the
jobsite. This is his reply:
Thank you for contacting this office. The inspector has now reminded himself
what the written Code is. Sorry for any inconvenience to you or your client.
The permit is now complete.

This same issue was handled in North Florida two months earlier:
So, in summary, I apologize and I was incorrect. I will relay this information
to the staff. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to contact me
directly.

We learned a great deal about our industry and what influence we didn’t
have when the 2001 Barrier Code was first proposed, discussed and passed
into law without any input from licensed and insured Pool Professionals. 15
years later things have changed…but we still have a long way to go and your
involvement is critical.
Now, for our industry, actions speak louder than words. We have been
complaining about unlicensed activity, along with the unfairness and inequality
of the enforcement of the rules since our organization began. Now, we have
some effective assistance to correct these situations.
It is time for to you to help. We need you to tell us what the problems are,
as soon as they happen and to stand by us to get them fixed. Not everything
goes the way we want, but the most important thing is that win or lose, together,
we are stronger than one.
