were of firms not connected with their industry’s association. It would appear
also that the businessman who refuses to pay association dues is always the
first to criticize and say that an association does him no good. However, he
is always on the front line to take the benefits that come his way as a result
of the association and its dues-paying members. These benefits don’t just
happen. They are the results of lots of hard work and effort by the great number
of individuals (who are actually a small percentage of the entire membership)
who devote time and energy to get the tasks done.
But there are more benefits to association membership. One, which is a
pure bonus, is the benefit of business coming one’s way simply because of
membership. Association members just naturally prefer to do business with
those who share the load of maintaining their trade group. This “fringe” benefit
will more than offset your dues and other costs of participation. There are
many other benefits to being active in the FSPA, too many of which there is
not room to go into them here. The point is, to benefit you have to join or if
already a member, to provide a little bit of your time. Roosevelt was right, you
owe it to your industry!
